Personal Learning Network (PLN)

According to an online definition, a personal learning network (PLN) is an informal community that allows me to enhance my learning and take charge of my own professional development.

Looking back at my own PLN, I realized more has to be done to take charge of my own professional development, especially if I want to establish myself as a professional instructional designer. Before EME6414, I hardly connect to any instructional design communities. I hardly knew any instructional designers and I really hardly ever knew much about the field.

I started to join eLearning and instructional design communities on Facebook, and they allow me to keep up to date on the trends, events, and updates on the field. Through online postings, I had the chance to join workshops and events. That helped me to develop myself professionally. Recently, I had a chance to interview an instructional design lead as part of my assignment, and I was pleasantly surprised to learn that I can actually learn a lot by personally connecting with a representative of my future self.

I won't say that I have a huge PLN, but I am started to become more aware and intentional about how I would like to build up my PLN. Even though I have not had a chance to get to know my colleagues ever since I started my new job, I think my colleagues have a wealth of wisdom, expertise, and knowledge in the instructional design field. I need to be more intentional in connecting with these colleagues as well as to continue build up my online PLN.

  1. I have an extensive PLN in the area of child advocacy; however, not in instructional design. This class and this post in particular have encouraged me to reach out and make more connections with the ID community and professional development. I do have some connections on LinkedIn, so I would consider looking there as well.

  2. I agree. My PLN was previously in the area of pharmacy practice that has been my teaching focus for some time. I agree that it is useful to connect more within this area. Yes, one more semester for us. I hope you have a great break and best wishes for as you make these connections and look to the future!

  3. Hello Sharon! I enjoyed reading your post from this week. I think it is wonderful how you have taken full advantage of the learning opportunities out there through 2.0 tools. I think this class has definitely expanded my awareness of tools that are out there and the importance of networking online. Best wishes when moving onwards in your journey!
